The World Family Plaque Inauguration
Norwich, England, 2005
On the 9th July, 2005, a plaque which lists the names of all known Norfolk and Norwich communities around the world was unveiled at ceremonies at Norfolk County Hall and at The Assembly House, both in Norwich, Norfolk, UK.
The Inaugurations were attended by representatives of Her Majesty the Queen, local dignitaries, and representatives of the named countries and communities.
In the evening, representatives of the communities joined the annual Lord Mayors Procession through the centre of Norwich.
Norfolk County Hall
The first event took place in the morning at Norfolk County Hall, where the plaque was transparent to suit the marble wall of the main hall.
Lady Knollys, Vice Lord Lieutenant of Norfolk County ( and representing HM The Queen) welcomed everyone, followed by Councillor John Baskerville, Chairman of Norfolk County Council, and representatives of the countries represented...
There followed presentations of the Canadian Flag to Norfolk County Council, and World Family badges to Lady Knollys and Councillor Baskerville.

So many in fact, that it took a couple of photographs to get everyone in!
Then over to The Norfolk Archive Centre for an introduction and tour of the facility by Dr. John Alban, the County Archivist; and a chance to view the special display of Norwich archive material.
Assembly House, Norwich
In the afternoon, The Lord Mayor of Norwich led the inauguration, along with Mayors and Chairmen of District Councils.
Derek Bickford-Smith introduced the procedure, thanking Michael King, Manager of the Assembly House, and introducing the main participants.
Derek was presented with a medallion for his work and drive in bringing together the World Family. Derek then presented Family Plaques to the Lord Mayor and High Sheriff.
And a presentation of flowers to Rachael Bobbit, PA to the Lord Mayor, in appreciation of her work helping to organise the Norwich events.
(My apologies to Pauline Denzey, PA to the Chairman of Norfolk County Council - the photographer (your truly) missed the opportunity to photograph the presentation of your flowers!).
Finally, group photographs before refreshments and on to the Lord Mayors Parade..
The Lord Mayors Procession
The representatives of the various countries joined the parade, helped by 'volunteers' from the Norwich Blue Badge Guides and Derek's family
Update: 14th May 2006 The plaque on the Assembly House wall has now been moved to the City Hall. It is the corridor next to the Lord Mayor's office.
