Norwich News: Dragon Hall re-opened & Norwich Market
Yesterday (5th April), Robert Toppes, the builder of Dragon Hall and former mayor of Norwich (re-enacted by Ian Pycroft) welcomed the current Lord Mayor Michael Banham and guests to the reopening of the hall after its major update.
A new north wing has been built. This houses an 'Events Room' for school visits, meetings, and private functions.
But the main improvement is the building of a modern glass gallery that opens up the lower half of the building so you can see the original archways.
Upstairs in the main hall, a new oak floor has been laid, and throughout the building are new display desks which give the visitor more information about the building. The Hall now also provides audio guides.
My initial view of the re-vamped building left me impressed. I shall visit again in a few days time to have a good look around and compile a Photo Tour.
My only regret is that I wish part of the main hall could have been laid out as it was in Toppes time, and that this beautiful building wasn't doomed to be surrounded in a couple of years time by drab and totally out of character 21st century housing....
And finally, the rebuilt Market Place has been completed - well almost. The Memorial Gardens at the back are still boarded up while they make up their minds what they are going to do with them....
